Objective : The Indian Constitution plays a vital role in shaping and strengthening our nation. We observe Samvidhan Hatya Diwas(“Day of the murder of the Constitution”) on 26th June as to remind citizens, especially the younger generation, of a dark chapter in India’s democratic history — the Emergency period (1975–1977). During this time, the misuse of constitutional provisions led to the suspension of fundamental rights, press censorship, and the silencing of political opposition. By remembering this day as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas, we acknowledge how fragile democracy can become when constitutional safeguards are weakened or misused.
Significance : This purpose was to help students realize that the Constitution is not just a document but a living guide that shapes the nation's identity and ensures the protection of fundamental rights. The emphasizes was on the importance of understanding historical events to learn valuable lessons about democracy and governance. The observance of Samvidhan Hatya Diwas, serves as a powerful lesson on the importance of vigilance, responsible governance, and active citizenship to protect democratic values and ensure that such an erosion of constitutional spirit never happens again. By doing so, the purpose was to inspire students to value constitutional principles, recognize their role as responsible citizens, and contribute to the nation’s continued upliftment through awareness, participation, and respect for democratic ideals.
Dr. B.R. Ambedkar (Chief architect of the Indian Constitution): “However good a Constitution may be, if those who are implementing it are not good, it will prove to be bad. However bad a Constitution may be, if those implementing it are good, it will prove to be good."
